DeLauro Statement on Resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn

Statement

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

"Mr. Flynn's resignation confirms what Democrats have long suspected, that the Trump Administration engaged in illegal contact with the Russians. It has even been reported that Mr. Flynn took money from the Russians for a dinner with Vladimir Putin to celebrate the Russian propaganda machine, RT. Mr. Flynn's resignation raises a number of questions, including who within the White House knew of these violations and when did they know about them? We need clear answers on what Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, Vice President Mike Pence, and others may have known. The American people deserve the answers to these questions and we demand it.

"President Trump continues to be shrouded in a dark ethical cloud when it comes to Russia and I urge him to clarify several important matters. From Russian interference in the 2016 election and his defense of Vladimir Putin, to his close ties with Moscow and his advisors' communications, the American people need to clear answers on these issues. Further, with Russia having deployed a cruise missile that violates a long-standing arms treaty, we need President Trump to act in American interests and send a strong message to Moscow that this is unacceptable.

"Finally, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz continues to fail the American public in his role in launching investigations. Despite spending millions of dollars on worthless investigations into the Obama Administration, Benghazi, and Secretary Clinton's e-mails, Mr. Chaffetz refuses to take any action on the President's outrageous actions, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. In the absence of action in the House, we need a bipartisan, independent, outside commission to investigate Russia's intervention in our election and Mr. Flynn's actions."
